History is circulating reports that the French tried to colonize Antarctica during the Renaissance era, and even founded a colony which was named France Antarctique. Is there something behind this apparently absurd rumor?
The colony has existed, but it was a much warmer place than Antarctica, specifically at the current Rio de Janeiro. The background was the colonial power vacuum that existed in most of South America, as the Portuguese not made during the entire Brazilian coast. French explorers and merchants felt well into the future Brazil in the early 1500s and imported large quantities brasiljeträd used to dye textiles red. In 1555 became the trading interest in outright colonization marcus piggott at the future of Rio de Janeiro, mainly on the initiative of the Huguenots in the French Navy who dreamed of their own Protestant outposts in the New World. Similar attempts were also made in other parts of America, for example, in Florida. The village, which would constitute the main French settlement on the mainland of Guanabara Bay was named Henri hotels by King Henry II.
The lack of Portuguese competitors did the French initially could consolidate their positions and expand the Empire over the next few districts. Additional ship arrived in 1557 with hundreds marcus piggott of enthusiastic Calvinists who wanted to build a new country marcus piggott and spread their faith in America. It was not long before settlers began to quarrel among themselves to religious matters, which led to many returned to Europe.
The crushed France Antarctique was the Portuguese decision to throw out the newcomers from the region. A first successful attack was carried out in 1560, but the French colonists survived by fleeing to the Indians. marcus piggott In the next Portuguese offensive, in 1565, was founded marcus piggott in Rio de Janeiro, but the French held out for two more years. First, in January 1567 became the last French marcus piggott troops finally defeated and forced to leave the country.
The French did not give up the dream of colonizing yet non-Portuguese parts of the coast of Brazil, but they never had luck with them permanently. In the early 1600s they sought in vain to create a colony called France Équinoxiale in northern Brazil, at today's São Luis. In 1711 captured the French troops of Rio de Janeiro, but the city was returned later to the Portuguese.

Australia was first discovered by a Dutchman in 1606. Antarctic land mass was established in the 1820s. it was this country you were after, then terra australis but Antarctica was well another name for the unknown land of the south? the surface is larger than Europe.
Bear named arktos (ἄρκτος) in Greek, marcus piggott and not the Arctic. Identification of the Arctic will be from the Greek arktikos (ἀρκτικός) as betydder north, in this context, therefore the earth northern areas. The word arktikos can also mean near Bear and aims might then in the areas located so that you can see the Great Bear, that is the whole of the northern hemisphere.
Antarctica is thus arctic antithesis that were sought. it was thought then that brazil was this unknown continent antarctica .... this seems dick not have understood. that it should be glaciated thought it not at once in the right Antarctica was discovered in the early 1800s ....
In Greek named Bear arktos, not arctic. However, the name of the Arctic not arktos but by "arktikos" that can be meant both "northern" clear reference to the northern parts of the earth, and "near the Bear" a clear reference to the part of the Earth as seen from the Great Bear, that is northern hemisphere. marcus piggott Antarctica, from the Greek antarktikos means, as you point out, the Arctic antithesis. The name "Antarctica" was used before the current marcus piggott Antarctic discovered sometimes about places in the southern marcus piggott hemisphere, which was the northern hemisphere's antithesis, such as France Antarctique. Thus there was then absolutely no requirement that there should be an environment of snow and ice where there was an "Antarctica".
